Information for people with individual needs

The Workshops Rail Museum seeks to provide equitable access to all visitors using our services, facilities and resources. Please contact us ahead of your visit to request these services, or advise a Visitor Service Officer when you arrive at the Ticket Office/Museum Entrance. Our staff are happy to discuss any queries you have regarding specific access requirements.

Transport and your arrival at The Workshops Rail Museum

The Workshops Rail Museum is located in North Ipswich on a readily accessible site. Public buses set down approximately 20m from the entrance to the Museum. A set down zone is located directly in front of the Museum Ticket Office should visitors prefer to alight at the entrance. The main entrance to The Workshops Rail Museum is wheelchair accessible. Car parking spaces for people with disabilities are available in the North Street car park located 50m from the entrance to the Museum.

Carers and the Companion Card

The Workshops Rail Museum recognises the Queensland Government's Companion Card program, and admits carers free on presentation of appropriate identification. If you have any concerns about eligibility, please phone the Museum prior to your visit.

Toilet facilities

Toilet facilities for people with disabilities are located in numerous locations on the site - behind the Boilershop Gallery temporary exhibition space, at the Ticket Office/ Museum Entrance, and at the rear of Trackside Café.

Seating

Armless seating is provided around the Museum and in Trackside Caféé. Outdoor seating and picnic tables are available in the grassed areas surrounding Trackside Café.

Physical support and mobility

A people mover is available to drive visitors who may find walking strenuous for the duration of Behind the Scenes Tours of the Working Workshops. This service is provided by QR and is subject to availability. Please contact us prior to your visit to make arrangements.

The Traverser (starting point for Behind the Scenes Tours of the Working Workshops) is accessible to wheelchairs and pushers - QR staff will assist visitors onto the Traverser via a ramp.

Wheelchairs and prams are available for use within the Museum from Ticket Office. They are free of charge and subject to availability.

Exhibition areas in the Museum are accessed via gently sloping ramps or are at ground level. Trackside Café can be accessed from the rear of the building via a ramp or via a chair lift - please ask a Visitor Service Officer to assist you.

Other facilities

Wheel chair accessible water fountains are located near the Parents Room in the Museum or on the path at the rear of Trackside Café.

The Parents Room (located near the Retail Shop) is wheel chair accessible.

Museum exhibits and interpretation

Exhibits and displays within the Museum are presented using a variety of modes ranging from text panels, multi-media, static object displays, audio, live performance, to interactives. The material presented in each exhibition or event will vary according to content and every effort will be made to provide material in a variety of modes suitable to the broadest possible audience. Support material will include where possible transcripts, subtitles and other material considered appropriate.
