All aboard for a journey of discovery! Depart Roma Street Station for a 70 minute journey on an historic steam train bound for The Workshops Rail Museum in Ipswich, the birthplace of rail in Queensland.

Interact and engage with 15 larger-than-life, wholly interactive exhibitions that each explore a difference aspect of the 'rail in Queensland' story. Step into the real Working Workshops, which continues to work on the restoration and maintenance of the Heritage Fleet, just as they have for over 100 years before travelling back to Roma Street Station via coach (bus).

Behind the Scenes Tours

A visit to The Workshops Rail Museum includes a Behind the Scenes Tour of the Working Workshops. Two tours are available:

  • Steam Shop Tour, which showcases the ins and outs of steam engines.
  • Blacksmiths Tour, where visitors see sparks fly and furnaces roar. Remember it is a real Workshop, so for your safety enclosed footwear is required.

A limit of 50 visitors per Tour applies.

Door-to-door bus service for groups

A bus can be arranged to collect your group after 9:00am from your school to travel to Roma Street Station, and return your group from The Workshops Rail Museum direct to school before 2:45pm for an additional charge of $375.00 per group of up to 53 people. Bus includes seat belts. Conditions apply, ask us for details when you book.
