Geoff Thompson

Geoff Thompson started working with insects and illustrating in 1975, as a research assistant to the late Dr Tom Woodward at the Entomology Department of the University of Queensland.

Geoff Thompson
In 1979 Geoff graduated with an Associate Diploma of Applied Biology from Queensland Institute of Technology (now QUT).
In 1982 he started at the Queensland Museum, as a technician in the Lower Insect section. He kept illustrating, participated in collecting fieldtrips and helped to maintain and enlarge the Queensland Museum's insect collection.

After the historic Dodd Collection of tropical insects was donated to the Queensland Museum in 1987, Geoff developed specialist archival repair skills, under the guidance of QM Conservation staff, in order to maintain the collection. Geoff curated the redisplay of the Dodd Collection, The Butterfly Man of Kuranda in 2010.

Geoff's illustrations have appeared in many books, scientific journals, posters and displays and have been used as logos, book covers and presentation pieces. He has won prizes in several national competitions for insect illustration.

In 2005 he was awarded a Queensland-Smithsonian Fellowship to spend 15 weeks in the USA.

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC is the largest museum complex in the world. The National Museum of Natural History is one of its 10 large museums and galleries situated on the National Mall. Within it the United States Department of Agriculture has its Systematic Entomology Laboratory, whose staff maintain and do research on a large part of the National Insect Collection. Geoff worked closely with J. Marie Metz, a staff illustrator there. He learnt specialist digital illustration techniques and also furthered his interest in digital micro-photography. This fellowship transformed the way he works in illustration and photography.

Geoff has exhibited his traditional illustrations and the etchings he does in his spare time, at many group exhibitions and three solo exhibitions:- Gladstone Regional Gallery in 2002, State Library of Queensland in 2003 and Miskin Gallery, Mt Coot-tha Gardens, Brisbane, in 2006. He is a member of the US-based Guild of Natural Science Illustrators and has attended and presented at two GNSI conferences; Denver, 2003 (where he exhibited in their group exhibition) and Bar Harbor, 2005.
