Trails
Maths Trail
This trail will guide students through the museum. It will also allow students to develop their knowledge and understanding of algebra, numbers, measurement and space.
Time, Continuity and Change Trail
This trail will guide students through the museum exhibits. It will allow them to explore Queensland’s social history. Students will also have opportunities to develop their researching, analysing and interpreting skills.
Programs
Energy & Change: Machines Challenge
The unit directs student's investigation of the science stations at The Workshops Rail Museum, and assists them to solve six different challenges. Suitable for years 8,9,10, these challenges involve designing devices based on a range of scientific concepts incuding:
- Magnetic forces
- Electromagnetism
- Energy storage
- Balancing forces
- Magnetic repulsion
- Simple machines (eg levers)
The program is designed to be completed in conjunction with a visit to The Workshops Rail Museum.
Me, My Place and My Groups: Digital Stories
This is a 3 week introductory program for year 8 SOSE students. The program explores ideas related to personal and group identity and culture. It examines the role that place has in shaping these identities. Students will use geographic skills to investigate these topics. They will explore identity and culture through the examination of stories, objects and artefacts. They will create their own multimedia presentations.
Sugarcane, Cattle and Coal - Rail Transportation and Industry
This 10 week program will provide an overview of the history of Queensland industries and the impact rail had on these industries. Students will examine the impact that industrial development had on their local area.
Workshops
Into the Vault
Discover the Museum collections not currently on display and develop an understanding of the role Museums play in protecting and preserving the past. Sessions are suitable for children aged 12 - 17.
