The Great Train Robbery

The story of The Great Train Robbery remains a mystery after 72 years. Use your investigation skills to find the missing piece that will help us crack the case.

On the evening of 31 August 1938, a daring robbery took place on board a mixed goods train travelling from Cloncurry to Duchess. It is believed that two men on horseback stole two mail bags full of miners' wages.

Follow the clues, interrogate the suspects, examine the evidence and decide for yourself who helped the robbers to commit this daring crime.

Regular times throughout the day

A 'whodunit' adventure for the whole family. Become a Deputy Detective and work with the Workshops Police Inspector to investigate the mystery of the missing miners' wages. Collect your clue sheet, 'interview' the suspects and gather evidence. This case was never solved - are you up to the challenge?

Police Station

Create an identikit reward poster for the train robbers and display it on our Wanted Wall. Have your fingerprints taken and compile a police profile.

Stick 'Em Up Dress Ups in Old Workshops Town

Dress up as cops and robbers and act out your own train robbery in a kid-sized town, complete with its own police station, jail and railway station.

The Hide Out

Grab your tools and search for gold. How many precious gold nuggets will you find?

The Great Train Robbery – Museum Trail

9:30am to 5:00pm

Unearth exciting facts about rail in Queensland as you follow a trail through the Museum. Visit each 'suspect' of The Great Train Robbery at the stations located throughout the Museum and collect a stamp on your Trail Card.

The Mini Getaway Train

Tickets are $3 per person (ages 1 and over) and are purchased after entry to the Museum.

Place yourself at the scene of the crime with a photo of yourself in a special poster for $5.

Wood Workshop

Sessions throughout the day.
Additional charges apply, no bookings required.

Create your very own guards van in our Wood Workshop. Kits are $9.90 and adult supervision is essential. Enclosed footwear is essential.

Groups of over 15 or more people are asked to make a group booking for the Wood Workshop.

Find out what really goes on in a real railway Workshop when you enter QR's Working Workshops where heritage trains are maintained by skilled craftsmen. Remember, it's a real Workshop, so for your safety enclosed footwear is required.

Bookings are essential and additional charges apply

Take a ride on a Steam Train similar to the one used in the Cloncurry to Duchess train robbery! Travel from Roma Street Station in Brisbane to The Workshops Rail Museum where you can play your part as Deputy Detective at The Great Train Robbery event before travelling back to Roma Street Station by coach (bus).

Ticket price includes entry to the Museum.

Bush Picnic

Wednesday 29 September

Dress up in Australian bush style for a day of family fun and see demonstrations of whip cracking, damper and billy tea making. Learn bush dancing and discover more about the Australian bush.

Picnic Hamper

28 & 29 September 2010

Enjoy a picnic lunch while you contemplate who committed the crime. Hampers include wraps, cakes/slices, fruit, juice or water, and a treat. Picnic hampers must be pre-booked.

Groups and Outside Hours School Care groups are welcomed to The Great Train Robbery event with group entry rates and specially prepared Activity Trails.
